Synopsis
One lazy afternoon in a backwater Louisiana town, Martine takes a leap into an unfamiliar convertible. The driver, Gordy, an awkward young itinerant who eyed her in the diner earlier, isn't displeased to find this pretty sylph in his front seat. Soon they meet Brett, a laconic, humble man just released from prison. Martine isn't keen on going solo with Gordy, and now it's raining cats and dogs, so she invites Brett along, and the unlikely trio sets out, each person unsure of the destination. What ensues is a journey through the lush green byways of rural Louisiana and into the depths of these characters' souls. Naturally the strangers are suspicious of each other, but each passing mile gives them chances to prove their trustworthiness. As they tell personal stories, the sense of danger dissolves, and the narrative threads of their past gradually engender mutual appreciation and delicately interwoven fates. As they roll into New Orleans, the powerful secrets Brett uncoils steers the makeshift family toward profound love and second chances. Udayan Prasad's astute insight into outsider experience, combined with William Hurt's brilliantly restrained performance, gives The Yellow Handkerchief wrenching emotional authenticity. Prasad and his visionary team of Academy Award winners—producer Arthur Cohn, cinematographer Chris Menges, and Hurt—have created a timeless, deeply humanistic film about staying the course and letting people in. -- © Sundance Film Festival

Cinema Sundays continues its 48th series with the Baltimore Premiere of The Yellow Handkerchief. This pithy southern road pic features William Hurt leading a very fine cast through the wilds of Louisiana!
Our speaker for this week is TBA…But rest assured I’m on it!
Thanks to Drew Lichtenberg of Center Stage for his fine observations on Bluebeard! It was a fun screening!
Sunday should be a most interesting film and I look forward to seeing you there!

If youve never been to Cinema Sundays before, see below for our stimulating, updated, yet official description.
Precisely at 9:45 on a given Sunday morning, while birds chirp in the most musical manner, the doors at the Charles Theatre swing open to reveal a lobby replete with tasty bagels, hot coffee and friendly volunteers ready to serve them to you. All of our volunteers have been pre-tested for a complete lack of morning grouchiness and provide the nicest servicewithin reason!
Guarded carefully by the enormous lobby penguin bagels, coffee and scintillating yet improvised conversation continues until 10:30. At precisely 10:30:07 some brief opening remarks by yours truly will be followed by a few remarks from our guest speaker who will never do either of two things. First he or she will never ever give away the plot of the film and second the speaker will not go on too longespecially if the film is one of those 2.5 h our Soviet era documentaries on the Romance of the Seven Tractor Drivers.
Following a brief admonition not to talk during the film and a recommendation to sublet your cell phone to a starving student from the third world the screening will take place. Upon completion of the screening a robust question and answer session featuring our guest speaker will include your fascinating observations upon the recently screened movie.
This flowery description barely describes the sublime joy and excitement which is Cinema Sundays. If there is a better way to spend Sunday mornings it simply hasnt occurred to me.yet!
