Cinema Sundays 5/2, "It Came From Kuchar"
Cinema Sundays Spring 2010 Series 48!
Sunday May 2, 2010
Cinema Sundays at the Charles continues its All Star 48th series on May 2nd , with the Baltimore Premier of It Came From Kuchar. Directed byJennifer M. Kroot. Starring John Waters, Buck Henry, Atom Egoyan, George & Mike Kuchar…and a host of other funny people.
2009 USA Not Rated. Running time 86 minutes.
Synopsis
In the early 1960’s, alongside Andy Warhol, the Kuchar brothers shaped the New York underground film scene. Known as the “8mm Mozarts”, their films were noticeably different than other underground films of the time. They were wildly funny, but also human and vulnerable.
Their films have inspired many filmmakers, including John Waters, Buck Henry, Atom Egoyan, Guy Maddin and Wayne Wang (all are interviewed in this film). Despite having high profile fans, the Kuchars remain largely unknown because they are only ambitious to make movies, not to be famous.
“It Came From Kuchar” interweaves the brothers’ lives, their admirers, a history of underground film and a “greatest hits” of Kuchar clips into a mesmerizing stream of consciousness tale.
Affectionately directed by one of George’s former students, Jennifer M. Kroot, “It Came From Kuchar” will introduce you to the amazing Kuchar brothers – two brothers who love to make movies and continue to inspire others. --© Official Site

Cinema Sundays continues its 48th series with the Baltimore Premiere of It Came From Kuchar. This comedy/documentary should be just the ticket. Reviews are very good for this offbeat indie pic…I say why not! Meanwhile Karen Kaufman has asked me to point out that we still have seven or so films left in this series and there is still time to buy a mini subscription. Also if you purchased a single ticket you can convert that towards a mini subscription….Now back to film biz…
Our speaker for this week is None other than Jed Dietz the man behind the MD Film Festival. It’s a thrill to have him back at Cinema Sundays.
Flashbacks or no flashbacks…who could have done a better job last week with The Yellow Handkerchief than the amazing Mike Giuliano! I owe Mike a great film!
Sunday should be a most interesting film and I look forward to seeing you there!

If youve never been to Cinema Sundays before, see below for our stimulating, updated, yet official description.
Precisely at 9:45 on a given Sunday morning, while birds chirp in the most musical manner, the doors at the Charles Theatre swing open to reveal a lobby replete with tasty bagels, hot coffee and friendly volunteers ready to serve them to you. All of our volunteers have been pre-tested for a complete lack of morning grouchiness and provide the nicest servicewithin reason!
Guarded carefully by the enormous lobby penguin bagels, coffee and scintillating yet improvised conversation continues until 10:30. At precisely 10:30:07 some brief opening remarks by yours truly will be followed by a few remarks from our guest speaker who will never do either of two things. First he or she will never ever give away the plot of the film and second the speaker will not go on too longespecially if the film is one of those 2.5 h our Soviet era documentaries on the Romance of the Seven Tractor Drivers.
Following a brief admonition not to talk during the film and a recommendation to sublet your cell phone to a starving student from the third world the screening will take place. Upon completion of the screening a robust question and answer session featuring our guest speaker will include your fascinating observations upon the recently screened movie.
This flowery description barely describes the sublime joy and excitement which is Cinema Sundays. If there is a better way to spend Sunday mornings it simply hasnt occurred to me.yet!
