Cinema Sundays March 21, "Lourdes"
Cinema Sundays Winter 2010 Series 47!
Sunday March 21, 2010
Cinema Sundays at the Charles continues its 47th series on March 21st, with the Baltimore Premier of Lourdes. Written and Directed by Jessica Hausner. Starring Sylvie Testud, Lea Seydoux, Gilette Barbier, Gerhard Liebmann.
2010 Non Rated. In French with English subtitles. Running time 96 minutes.
Synopsis
Sylvie Testud, star of LOURDES, may be the greatest French actress of her generation. Like Isabelle Huppert, she effortlessly slips into whatever role she assumes. Unlike Catherine Deneuve, she does not dazzle us with glamorous perfection, but radiates a charisma that is born of flaws that are all too real. As Christine, she is a young woman confined to a wheelchair, visiting the city of Lourdes in hope of a miraculous recovery – along with thousands of others. Yet the movie’s real subject is not religious belief, but human frailty. LOURDES asks us to consider how we would live life severely disabled. And if the hoped-for miracle befell someone else? If romance and the chance for happiness fell from the sky? The film lets no one off the hook: not Christine, nor her fellow pilgrims, the religious order that runs the show, or the pretty nurses who fancy themselves angels of mercy. --© Palisades Tartan

Ho hum…Yes indeed it’s just another great film on Cinema Sundays all star series 47! Yes indeed Lourdes has won six awards and has received very positive reviews! Whether you believe in things or believe in nothing (like moi!) Lourdes should supply some fascinating insights to all.
Our speaker for this week is Psychologist/Professor Dr. Larry Raifman. Dr. Raifman is one of our most perceptive speakers at Cinema Sundays and I am thrilled to have him back.
I want to thank Chris Reed for his fine thoughts on The Girl on the Train. I also want to apologize for saying he taught at Villa Julie College rather than Stevenson University! Ooops.
Looking forward to seeing you on the 21st for what promises to be a ANOTHER great French filme!

If you’ve never been to Cinema Sundays before, see below for our stimulating, updated, yet official description.
Precisely at 9:45 on a given Sunday morning, while birds chirp in the most musical manner, the doors at the Charles Theatre swing open to reveal a lobby replete with tasty bagels, hot coffee and friendly volunteers ready to serve them to you. All of our volunteers have been pre-tested for a complete lack of morning grouchiness and provide the nicest service…within reason!
Guarded carefully by the enormous lobby penguin bagels, coffee and scintillating yet improvised conversation continues until 10:30. At precisely 10:30:07 some brief opening remarks by yours truly will be followed by a few remarks from our guest speaker who will never do either of two things. First he or she will never ever give away the plot of the film and second the speaker will not go on too long…especially if the film is one of those 2.5 h our Soviet era documentaries on the Romance of the Seven Tractor Drivers.
Following a brief admonition not to talk during the film and a recommendation to sublet your cell phone to a starving student from the third world the screening will take place. Upon completion of the screening a robust question and answer session featuring our guest speaker will include your fascinating observations upon the recently screened movie.
This flowery description barely describes the sublime joy and excitement which is Cinema Sundays. If there is a better way to spend Sunday mornings it simply hasn’t occurred to me….yet!
