Cinema Sundays 4/11, "Mother"
Cinema Sundays Spring 2010 Series 48
Sunday April 11, 2010
Cinema Sundays at the Charles Begins its 48th series on April 11th, with the Baltimore Premier of Mother. Directed by Joon-Ho Bong. Written by Eun Kyo Park and Joon-Ho Bong. Starring Hye-Ja Kim, Bin Won, Ku Jin, Yoon Jae-Moon.
2009 Rated R. In Korean with English subtitles. Running time 128 minutes.
Synopsis
Hye-ja is a single mom to 27-year-old Do-joon. Her son is her raison d’être. Though an adult in years, Do-joon is naïve and dependent on his mother, and a constant source of anxiety, often behaving in ways that are foolish or simply dangerous. Walking home alone one night down a nearly empty city street, he encounters a young girl who he follows for a while before she disappears into a dark alley.
The next morning, she is found dead in an abandoned building and Do-joon is accused of her murder. Thanks to an inefficient lawyer and an apathetic police force, Do-joon’s case is quickly closed, but his mother refuses to let this be the end of the story. Trusting no one, Hye-ja’s maternal instincts kick into overdrive, and she sets out to find the girl’s killer and prove her son’s innocence. --© Magnolia

After a week off for Passover/Easter Cinema Sundays begins our Spring series with the much acclaimed Korean film Mother. Currently sitting on RottenTomatoes.com with a stunning 93% positive rating what could be bad. Cinema Sundays has often had a streak of gruesome mothers on the screen…this film should help tilt things in the positive direction!
Our speaker for this week is still TBA but I am working hard to find either a mother or someone Korean!

If youve never been to Cinema Sundays before, see below for our stimulating, updated, yet official description.
Precisely at 9:45 on a given Sunday morning, while birds chirp in the most musical manner, the doors at the Charles Theatre swing open to reveal a lobby replete with tasty bagels, hot coffee and friendly volunteers ready to serve them to you. All of our volunteers have been pre-tested for a complete lack of morning grouchiness and provide the nicest servicewithin reason!
Guarded carefully by the enormous lobby penguin bagels, coffee and scintillating yet improvised conversation continues until 10:30. At precisely 10:30:07 some brief opening remarks by yours truly will be followed by a few remarks from our guest speaker who will never do either of two things. First he or she will never ever give away the plot of the film and second the speaker will not go on too longespecially if the film is one of those 2.5 h our Soviet era documentaries on the Romance of the Seven Tractor Drivers.
Following a brief admonition not to talk during the film and a recommendation to sublet your cell phone to a starving student from the third world the screening will take place. Upon completion of the screening a robust question and answer session featuring our guest speaker will include your fascinating observations upon the recently screened movie.
This flowery description barely describes the sublime joy and excitement which is Cinema Sundays. If there is a better way to spend Sunday mornings it simply hasnt occurred to me.yet!
